When you live in an apartment building or complex of apartments it is important to consider that every tenant plays a role in the security of the building. There are important apartment security measures that everyone must consider. Although your landlord or the building manager is responsible for installing a security system for your building, the area of weakness with these systems is the human interface which could allow for error. Even the strongest security system can be breached, but the best way for a burglar to get by a security system in a building is by conning one of the tenants into opening the door for them.

There is no debating that in today’s age there is a greater awareness and need for burglar alarm systems than ever before. Just thirty or so years ago, less than 10 percent of homeowners owned or had any interest in owning a security system. For many of those who owned a security system, having it monitored by a central station was not desirable because in those days you could actually connect a pre-recorded tape dialer that would call the police department directly in the case of actual alarm activation. Most homeowners preferred invest in better locks for their doors as well as better lighting on the exterior of their homes rather than spend their money on a security system. Although most homeowners in those days would have liked to own a burglar alarm, the high price of a system was a deterrent.

In the information age in which we live in today, we have at our fingertips instant information about every and any topic our minds desire to explore. However, when it comes to understanding or gaining information about how the mind of a burglar works, im sorry to say that we often either come up with our own conclusions based on what we consider to be common sense or we see a movie where a burglar uses a credit card or a paperclip to break into a door and we assume it is that easy. The truth is that if we would just use a little common sense, re think and change some of the ways we do things, educate ourselves and families and consider home security enhancements, we can and will make our homes safer.

If you are a homeowner with pets, you may have additional home security concerns because of your pet. The best choice for protecting your family, pet(s), home, and your valuable and sentimental items is to install a monitored home security system. The top home security systems are equipped with motion detectors. A passive infrared motion detector (PIR) is an electronic security device that detects intruders by sensing motion or body heat in the area being protected. Most motion detectors are designed for use when your family is away from home or when no one will be passing through the area covered by the sensor. Many people instantly believe they cannot have pets living in a home with activated motion detectors and sensors, but that is actually completely wrong.
