Four Routines to Keep Your Home Safe
Have you ever been rushing to make it to work on time and forgot to lock you back door? How about that sinking feeling you may have had when you return from work only to find you left your garage door open all day? We make home security mistakes all of the time, but it does not need to be that way. Depending on the size of your home will determine how long it takes to secure it, but we’re guessing you can have it done in 5-minutes or less. Below is a quick guide.
1. Now that it is summer time, go from room to room and give your windows a quick check. Make sure the windows are locked and do not appear to have been tampered with. Be sure to lock windows on second floors as well; burglars have been known to use ladders in order to access second story window.
2. Be sure outside items are picked up and put away. It sounds ridiculous, but some of the most common items stolen from a home are children’s outside toys and lawn furniture left out for extended periods. Criminals looking to make a quick score will grab high dollar bicycles, squirt guns, barbecue grills, pool equipment, and the like. These items are then sold for a fraction of what you paid for them. Not exactly a crime of the century, but some criminals specifically look for these items as they know the police are not going to put too much effort into finding the culprit.
3. In the same realm of Miami ADT home security, make sure fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, gas detectors and, if your home is equipped with one, your sump-pump is working. You’re probably wondering how they relates to your home being broken into. These four items directly relate to the safety and security of your home and family. Of course we are not suggesting you check these items each time you leave your home, but you should check them periodically throughout the year.
4. Lastly, make sure you turned off the oven and the iron! Seriously, leaving these two items on has grown to the point of cliche. However; you might be shocked to learn of the high number of home fires which occur each year due to the unsafe use of these items and others like them.
Some of the above items do not have to be performed before you leave your home every day. Pick and choose what works best for you and your living situation.
