5 Ways to Improve Your Home’s Security
Security is an important feature of your home, and is an investment you want to keep safe and secure. These 5 ways will help you keep your home safe and protect the valuables inside.
1. Use Window and Door Shades
Installing shades on your doors and windows will help keep intruders out of and away from your home. Burglars are often attracted to homes that showcase their belongings by not having any shades, blinds or curtains in the windows, especially at night. There are heavy-duty curtains and shades available that can’t be seen through. If burglars can’t see what’s in your home, they are less tempted to break in.
2. Upgrade Your Locks
If you haven’t upgraded your locks since you purchased your home or it’s been a few years since you have changed the locks, consider an upgrade. The older a lock is, the easier it is to pick, break or damage. If you don’t have locks on your windows, it’s in your best interest to invest in some. If you are looking for top notch security for your home, get a lock solution that is no less than Grade 1. Grade 1 locks are the highest security deadbolt systems available.
3. Set A Timer
If you don’t use a timer in your home, you should. Timers are great to use because you can set them to make it appear that someone is home, even when there is no one home. Timers are great to use when you go on vacation. Timers can be set to shut on and off at any time. Some timers feature a random function that shuts the lights on and off various times of the day and night. There are some timers available that allow you to shut electronic devices, including radios and TVs, on and off, in addition to the lights.
4. Install Motion Sensors
Motion sensors are great to use when they are strategically placed. You should have motion sensors located at the front and back door, and side doors if you have them. When someone steps in the line of sight of the motion detector, the light will come on. Some motion sensors have a noise feature that causes the alarm to sound when the sensor is activated. Burglars are likely to leave your property once the light from the motion sensor turn on or the alarm sounds. Motion sensors are inexpensive and easier to install than a security system.
5. Keep Your Landscape in Order
Your landscape plays more of a role in the security of your home than you realize. If you have large trees, bushes, décor or other items, consider removing or trimming the trees and bushes. As for the décor, you can remove it from your yard or place it in your yard in a way that does not obstruct sidewalks or paths. Large bushes and trees allow burglars to hide. To deter intruders, plant thorn bushes near windows and doors.
