The problem with ladders left lying around the house is that they give people access to your upper floor windows. Most people do not lock their windows when their front doors are bolted, and because of this, you should not leave entry to your windows lying around your yard! Leave your ladder in the shed or the garage where it belongs.

Facebook is great for keeping in touch with your friends and your relatives, but if you need to tell them that you are leaving town for some fun, let them know privately. Facebook messages about vacations are like catnip to thieves. Make sure that your entire family is keeping their posts to themselves. There will be time to talk about the vacation after you get back.

Having a visible security monitor feels like a good idea, as it lets the thieves know that your home is protected, but it also lets them know whether the device is armed or not. If they are familiar with the system, they may even know the scope and how to get around them.
